Practical tricks for sewing zippers
Sewing zippers can be one of the most difficult aspects of a sewing endeavour.
In this regard, a quote suddenly hit my mind-
“Sewing is not always easy sewing can quite often be hard and frustrating.” — Assembil Books
Therefore, sewing zipper Singapore is also a difficult task. So here are some hints and techniques to help you sew zipper Singapore more easily:
Pin the zipper
Pin the zipper to only the first layer of cloth, 4 to 5 inches apart. Then, as directed by the pattern, lay the second fabric on top and pin it to the zipper and first fabric. It will appear that you have overpinned, but that is fine!
The more you can do to secure the zipper, the better.
Continue to the left
Keep your fingers on the left side of the zipper while sewing. But don’t press; instead, keep your fingers firmly in place to prevent the zipper from sliding to the left.
Maintain a firm grip on the right side of the zipper with your right fingertips. Again, this prevents it from slipping from side to side.
Do you have good pin karma?
If you want to keep your pin karma, don’t take them out while sewing! Simply stitch straight over them and then remove them when finished.
If you don’t have good pin karma, try inserting your pins horizontally rather than vertically, parallel to the edge of the fabric. Just make sure the pinhead is facing you while you sew so it’s easy to pull out.
Slow down. There is no rush here!
There’s no need to rush when sewing zippers unless you’re competing in a speed sewing event. Slowing down allows you to keep an eye on what’s going on and to stop if things start to go wrong.
Use basting tape
Basting tape is always a good solution for stubborn zippers that won’t stay put.
Basting tape is a thin, double-sided tape that is applied first to the zipper tape or cloth. Then, peel off the paper backing from the other side of the tape and position the zipper as desired.
Press firmly
Once the zipper is in position, press it firmly with your fingers.
Repeat with the other piece of fabric, ensuring that the zipper is sandwiched as directed by your pattern. There will be no need for pins, your zipper will not budge, and there will be no bubbles!
